Driving America secular - our universities and colleges.

Albert Mohler notes in a post a few weeks ago that the universities and colleges of our nation are driving us secular.  How so?  They educate the leaders of tomorrow and since the 1960s they've been moving to the left.  What happens in the university doesn't stay in the university as he mentions regarding Yale.

Several years ago, sociologist Peter Berger argued that secularization has been most pervasive in two social locations — Western Europe and the American college and university campus. The campuses of elite educational institutions are among the most thoroughly secularized places on our planet. This should concern anyone with an interest in higher education, of course. But it really matters to every American — or at least it should.

A wonderful and concise explanation of why this is so was provided in the pages of The Weekly Standard this week by David Gelernter, a professor of computer science at Yale University. In the course of making a proposal for the “reclamation” of higher education, Professor Gelernter wrote this very important paragraph:
 
Since the cultural revolution culminating in the 1970s, the left has run nearly all of the nation’s most influential, prestigious universities. Their alumni, in turn, run American culture — the broadcast networks, newspapers, the legal and many other professions, Hollywood, book publishing, and, most important, the massive, insensate, crush-everything-in-your-path mega-glacier known as the U.S. federal bureaucracy — and even more important than that, the education establishment charged with indoctrinating our children from kindergarten up.

That’s why it matters to you. And that’s how the future direction of the culture is set by the current culture of the elite colleges and universities. Many parents are unaware of how this happens. Their children may or may not attend one of the most prestigious colleges in the nation. But in almost any other institution they will study under professors who want to be associated with (or eventually hired by) one of those elite institutions. Exceptions to this pattern are rare, and the influence of these elite schools extends throughout the culture at large.

David Gelernter is in a position to know. After all, he is a professor at Yale. As he makes clear, what happens at Yale doesn’t stay at Yale.

Gallup says 75% of Americans say religion is losing influence in US and they think that's a bad thing.

Here's an interesting Gallup survey.  It says 77% of Americans say religion is losing influence in America and that's a bad thing.

More than three in four of Americans say religion is losing its influence in the United States, according to a new survey, the highest such percentage in more than 40 years. A nearly identical percentage says that trend bodes ill for the country.

"It may be happening, but Americans don't like it," Frank Newport, Gallup's editor in chief, said of religion's waning influence. "It is clear that a lot of Americans don't think this is a good state of affairs."

According to the Gallup survey released Wednesday, 77% of Americans say religion is losing its influence. Since 1957, when the question was first asked, Americans' perception of religion's power has never been lower.

According to the poll, 75% of Americans said the country would be better off if it were more religious.

I don't think Americans are less religious.  Rather they've just transferred their allegiance to other "faiths".  I think man is inherently religious.  He was made to worship. The question is what will he worship.

What I think is in decline is allegiance to biblical faith.

I'm reminded of what John Adams said:

We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution is designed only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for any other.

I believe the Bible is true and it's particularly relevant to our experience in America where our society and culture is rooted in the Bible.  The problems we see manifested in society stem from an erosion of that faith in the lives of Americans.

Obama's Meltdown: Reason #11

Nile Gardiner, writing in the Telegraph, identifies 10 key reasons why the Obama presidency is in meltdown. He's right on all counts, but he missed an 11th key reason that Obama is so out of step with the majority of Americans.

Reason #11: President Obama despises America's moral foundation, rooted in the biblical principles of its historically predominant Christian faith, and his administration is actively dismantling that foundation.

Consider his repudiation of America's Christian origin; his appointment of radical pro-abortion and pro-homosexual activists to key positions in his administration from which they have unprecedented power to advance their social agenda; his transparently deceptive executive order promising no federal funding of abortion in Obamacare (the fig leaf provided to Rep. Bart Stupak and other "pro-life" Democrats in Congress to secure their votes for passage); Obamacare's infringement on the right of conscience for medical providers; his administration's rush to allow homosexuals to serve openly in the military despite the objections of all of the service chiefs; the administration's sabotage of the defense of the federal Defense of Marriage Act that resulted in it's being ruled unconstitutional in federal district court in Massachusetts earlier this summer.... and those are just the examples that come immediately to mind as I write this post.

Many Americans regard developments like these not just as an outrageous attack on the country they love, but as a personal attack on them, their faith, their values and their families. They have come to perceive this president more as an enemy than as their leader.

Does anyone need more evidence than this that elections have consequences?
